Edward Oswald Shebbeare
(1884–1964)
Edward Shebbeare (“Shebby”) acted as transport officer on the 1924 and 1933 expeditions, and was also appointed Deputy Leader by Ruttledge in 1933. Although not himself a climber, he reached the North Col that year at the age of nearly 50.
Shebbeare was educated at Charterhouse School and embarked on a long career with the Indian Forestry Department in 1906.
In 1938 he went to Malaya to serve as Chief Game Warden and was held as a Prisoner-of-War by the Japanese in Singapore from 1942 to 1945. Shebbeare was a respected author on forestry, natural history, and elephants.
