Lieutenant-Colonel Peter R. Oliver
Peter Oliver joined both the 1936 and 1938 expeditions, neither of which proved his most fruitful climbing experience, although he was also a talented artist who illustrated the 1936 book Everest: The Unfinished Adventure.
Tough and lean, Oliver was a career soldier who used his leave while serving with the South Waziristan Scouts on the North West Frontier (India) to climb in the Himalayas. In 1933 he made only the second successful ascent of Trisul (23,385 feet/7128 m) since Longstaff in 1907. Oliver was killed in action in Burma in 1945 while trying to help his battalion evade the Japanese.
