William Hutchinson Murray, OBE
murray
(1913–1996)
After a wide-ranging expedition to Garhwal in 1950, Murray initiated (with Mike Ward) and organized the 1951 reconnaissance of Everest.
Bill Murray was one of a group of active Scottish climbers before World War II. His book Mountaineering in Scotland, written in a German Prisoner-of-War camp, has inspired generations of British climbers to tackle Scottish winter climbing. In 1953 he explored the Api group in Nepal with John Tyson. There followed a lifetime of service to mountaineering and to the care of the environment in Scotland, as well as a successful career in writing (novels, biographies, and travel books).
