Edwin Garnett Home Kempson
kempson
(1902–1987)
Edwin Kempson came to the 1935 and 1936 expeditions as a highly experienced alpine climber. He performed useful roles on both occasions, including, in 1935, helping Spender with surveying work.
Kempson was educated at Marlborough College, where he returned as a teacher after graduating in mathematics from Cambridge. Kempson had 12 seasons of alpine climbing experience by 1935 and actively fostered climbing at Marlborough College, whose pupils included Wigram, Ward, Hunt, and Wylie.
A kindly and respected man, Kempson acted as College Archivist until 1986. He was also a keen lecturer on local history.
