Sherpas
The 1953 Mount Everest Expedition packed the necessary equipment needed from the UK for the expedition into 473 packages, weighing over 7 tonnes. This was sent by ship from the UK to India, where it was transferred to trains, then to lorries, then to conveyor trays on an overhead ropeway and finally carried on foot by Sherpas to Everest Base Camp in the Khumbu Glacier. The last leg of the journey took 17 days.
